Prosecutor Kym Worthy has charged Kevin Merritt Butler, 61, of Westland, in connection with a shooting incident involving his 55-year-old wife, of Westland.

On March 3, 2024, at approximately 3:35 p.m., Westland police officers were dispatched to a residence In the 36000 block of Cherry Hill for a reported shooting. Upon their arrival, officers were advised that the victim left the scene, and the defendant was still inside of the residence.

Officers set up a perimeter around the residence and notified the Western Wayne Tactical Response Unit to assist. After an eight-hour standoff, officers entered the home and placed the defendant into custody.

It is alleged that Defendant Butler fired a handgun at his wife before barricading himself inside his home. The victim did not sustain any injuries.

Kevin Merritt Butler has been charged with Discharge of a Firearm in or at a Building, Felonious Assault, Resisting and Obstructing a Police Officer, Domestic Violence, and two counts of Felony Firearm.*

He was arraigned today in 18th District Court and given a $300,000/10% bond with a GPS tether. The Probable Cause Conference is scheduled for March 14, 2024, at 8:30 a.m., and the Preliminary Examination is scheduled for March 21, 2024, at 8:30 a.m., before Judge Sandra Cicirelli.
